DISCOVERY SESSIONS
Participants will be able to select one of three hands-on, interactive Discovery Sessions lead by leading researchers. This is a chance to see, feel and exchange information in a structured but informal setting - a terrific opportunity for learning. Attendance in each group is limited to 20 to maximize interaction and access to materials.
1. Paleozoic Core Examination
A unique opportunity to examine Paleozoic (Silurian) bedrock cores from the Guelph-Kitchener-Waterloo areas; a region where recent Ontario Geological Survey mapping has lead to a refinement of the stratigraphic framework. Understand how the “new stratigraphy” is a powerful method to understand aquifer characterization, potential yields, recharge/discharge areas and vulnerability.
2. In-field Water Sampling and Analysis
A chance to observe and assist with sampling of waters using the latest equipment, techniques and protocols designed to provide high quality water/groundwater analysis. Field testing for various parameters will be demonstrated as will preparation of samples for shipment to labs for non-field analysis. A practical session for those involved in assessing water quality.
3. Geoscience Data Discovery
A session designed to highlight geoscience datasets critical to building conceptual models and understanding the geologic foundation of a watershed. The session will focus on the use of “Google Earth” viewing tools as a means of understanding and presenting data to unearth its full value. See how data can quickly and easily be customized to address your needs.
Registration for the Discovery Sessions will be on a first-come basis. To ensure that you can attend the session of greatest interest, participants are encouraged to sign-up early.
